Harbor Light Zen Sangha, located in Annapolis, Maryland, is a welcoming and inclusive community dedicated to the practice of Soto Zen Buddhism. Rooted in the rich traditions of Zen, the Sangha offers a serene environment for individuals of all backgrounds to explore mindfulness, meditation, and spiritual growth.

The Sangha emphasizes the practice of zazen (seated meditation) as a central pillar of its teachings, fostering a deep sense of stillness and awareness. Through regular meditation sessions, Dharma talks, and retreats, practitioners are guided in cultivating a life of presence, compassion, and interconnectedness.

Harbor Light Zen Sangha is committed to creating a space where participants can experience the transformative power of Zen practice in a supportive and nurturing environment. The community values simplicity, authenticity, and the direct experience of the present moment, offering guidance on integrating Zen principles into daily life.

In addition to meditation, the Sangha engages in thoughtful discussions on Buddhist teachings, ethical living, and the challenges of modern life. Harbor Light Zen Sangha also places a strong emphasis on service, encouraging members to extend their practice beyond the meditation cushion to benefit the wider community.

Whether you are new to Zen or an experienced practitioner, Harbor Light Zen Sangha invites you to join them in exploring the path of awakening. Together, they strive to embody the spirit of Zen and illuminate the way for others, like a harbor light guiding ships safely to shore.

Within the White Plum Asanga, after having accepted the 16 precepts, the first step in our teaching ministry is to be given the rank of “Hoshi” or Dharma Holder. This signifies that the practitioner is authorized to give Dharma talks and students in private interviews,
called Dokusan, under the supervision of their teacher. On May 31, 2025, Dr. Josh KuHai Radice will receive Dharma transmission from his teacher, Sensei Bob JinGen Ertman. At that time he will be given the rank of “Sensei”, will be eligible for membership in the American Zen Teachers Association, and the Sangha will be recognized by the White Plum Asanga.
